Granted, I don't have, in essence, a one of a kind kit. But my cherry set was less than 2/3 the price, and I got a May Monorail with Audix D6 in my bass drum included in my price. However, as noted, the Timeless Timber Oak sets are all sold out. And the DW had been equal or less costly, for the same size set for the other two. But, what do we have drums for, the sound, right? Comparing the YouTube sound for the DW Oak compared to the sound of Yamaha Phoenix and Tama Star Bubinga, as impressed as I am with the Yamaha and Tama, the DW is even more fabulous. I was never that impressed with the aesthetic of the drums.don't like the dark, satin look. I really liked the sound on the recording of the Timeless Timber Oak kit. So, I'm back to the Evans clear G2 over G1 heads, and that's where I'm staying! I have tried to get 'cute' with a bunch of different heads, thinking I could somehow improve the sound, but all I managed to do was to mess up the sound and make them essentially unplayable. I don't claim to know what I'm doing, tuning-wise, but I have found what, to my ears, sounds like acceptable intervals between the 5 toms in my set, with the snare drum somewhere toward the 10" and 12" tom range. That written, I think my DW drums sound pretty good, now that I found a decent tuning range. So, I don't know if my drums, in their current tuning, would sound good to anyone else. I don't know anyone who used hearing protection when I was in my mid-late teens and early twenties, when attending the stupid loud concerts that used to be standard practice in the 70s (the 60s were just a bit too early for me to experience). My ears are pretty damaged from way too loud music in my younger days, and being in loud industrial environments before I was smart enough to use hearing protection routinely. And I think cherry sounds great, which is why I decided to get that set. It's still going to come down to the tuning of said drums.ĭefinitely a great looking kit you got there! I bet it sounds even better!Ah, thanks very much! I do think they are beautiful to look at.I love just natural cherry with glossy lacquer. So, whether bubinga, maple, pine, driftwood, plywood, pressboard, etc. I always thought that there was too big a interval between the up tom and the floor tom on Morello's drums, and the set that he had in his studio when he taught at D&K, I don't think he ever tuned them. Louie's drums always sounded good, and Chico Hamilton's drums always had a certain sound to them. Buddy really didn't spend much time, if any, on the tuning of his drums outside of the snare. I've played on virtually every make of drums out there although I have missed a few of the "custom" drum sets. (bad analogy)Ģ016 marks 60 years that I've been playing these damn fool things. The memory lock system is fine, but it's like the air conditioned seats in my car, they're nice, but I really don't use them. I really don't mean for it to, but it will anyway. MDK, I apologize in advance because this is going to come out sounding sarcastic. I love the memory lock system, This guy explains them pretty well and I think the drums are just recorded on a phone. It's a great way to side by side some drums that you may never get to see or hear in the real world. So give your new fave a listen along with a Craviotto, or Phoenix, or Reference Pure etc, etc and see if you still love it as much. They almost always record in the same room with the same mics and there isn't a lot of treatment done to the audio. Practical wife is huge, good impediment, however!Memphis is the best place to side by side compare high end kits and snares. Yeah, Rob, guess I'm trying to convince myself that another kit would be st be darned. Like MDK and Bish, though, the hardware details of the Tama Star are really interesting and look like they would have some significant impact on sound. But, as has been mentioned here many times, recorded drum sounds are so dependent on many, many other factors than simply the sound from the drums themselves that it's really impossible to know if the kit is really stellar or if it's the combination of all the factors. I was very impressed with the sound on the Star Bubinga set from a certain drum shop in Tennessee (not sure it's okay to mention shop names here).
